L'ouverture de Guillaume Tell est l'ouverture de l'opéra de Gioachino Rossini, Guillaume Tell.

Dès 1834, dans la Gazette Musicale de Paris d'octobre et novembre, Hector Berlioz «rend compte sur Guillaume Tell de Rossini», particulièrement de son Ouverture qui, selon lui, «est une œuvre d’un immense talent qui ressemble au génie à s’y méprendre».

L'ouverture est en 4 parties. Une forme sonate y apparaît dans le début, démontrant un grand classicisme mozartien. Toutefois, Rossini y instaure son propre style, perceptible dès les premiers arpèges mêlés aux trémolos des cordes.

La première partie Andante, en mi mineur, dure trois minutes et est jouée uniquement par un quintette de violoncelles (excepté deux petits roulements de timbales (prémices de l'orage?) et quelques pizzicatos de cordes). Elle exprime le calme alpin des montagnes suisses. Ce très beau morceau en arpèges, plein de lyrisme, est un exemple parfait de maîtrise du contrepoint. Le choix des violoncelles n'est pas surprenant car dans sa jeunesse, Rossini en jouait ; cela pourrait donc être un hommage. (...)

The William Tell Overture is the overture to the opera William Tell (original French title Guillaume Tell), whose music was composed by Gioachino Rossini. William Tell premiered in 1829 and was the last of Rossini's 39 operas, after which he went into semi-retirement, although he continued to compose cantatas, sacred music and secular vocal music. The overture is in four parts, each following without pause.

There has been repeated use (and sometimes parody) of parts of this overture in both classical music and popular media, most famously as the theme music for The Lone Ranger in radio, television and film. It was also used as the theme music for the British television series The Adventures of William Tell.

Franz Liszt prepared a piano transcription of the overture in 1838 (S.552) which became a staple of his concert repertoire. There are also transcriptions by other composers, including versions by Louis Gottschalk for two and four pianos and a duet for piano and violin. (...)
